Structural Insulated Panels - Stunning SIPS

Structural Insulated Panels are composite elements made of a layer of rigid insulation sandwiched between two sheets of structural board such as Plywood, OSB or Cement Board. Depending on the manufacturers system and the loadings applied, timber studs may be introduced at the junction between panels.

A range of core insulation materials are available from Expanded Polystyrene to Phenolic foam, and many more in between, each with different performance capabilities. A phenomenal rate of technology transfer is allowing SIPS solutions to develop at a pace.

SIPS technology offers many advantages to the builder as well as to the end user:

  • Lightweight structure
  • Flexibility in terms of design
  • Rapidity of installation
  • High level of thermal and acoustic insulation
  • High level of air tightness

Although relatively new to the UK, in Germany, the USA and Canada there is evidence that SIPS technology is reliable and can accommodate a lot of uses and requirements – particularly where significant environmental benefits are required.

The SIPS industry claims that it will give timber frame a run for its money, but can this really happen without significant manufacturing investment? This is one of the big questions to be addressed in this Technical Talk session.

See the rapid growth in SIPS technology by attending Stunning SIPS.
